How much does a pane of glass weigh? – Quickly calculate with Spiegelmax

The weight of a glass pane is relevant when it comes to transporting high-quality and potentially heavy glass panes and installing them on-site. It can also be helpful to know the specific weight of a mirror before purchasing it, so you can plan the correct mounting on-site.

So you don't have to worry about any potentially unpleasant surprises, our calculator tool lets you calculate the weight of glass for your chosen product – online, accurately, and with just a few clicks. In addition to conventional glass, our calculator also covers other types: If needed, you can also determine the weight of toughened or laminated glass. Feel free to use our online calculator to easily determine the total weight of your Spiegelmax order.

The glass weight calculator from Spiegelmax – Simple calculation with just a few clicks

To calculate the specific gravity of your chosen glass pane, enter the corresponding glass dimensions (width/height/thickness) in the respective fields of our calculator. The values should be entered in millimeters (mm). The resulting calculation will display both the surface area and the total weight of the glass pane/mirror.

If you don't yet know the exact values—for example, the thickness of the glass—you can alternatively work with approximate values and at least calculate the approximate glass weight. The typical thickness of a custom-made glass pane is usually between 4 and 8 mm. This will give you a rough idea of the expected glass/mirror weight.

How heavy is a pane of glass? – Calculating glass weight – Formula for those interested

If necessary, you can also determine the weight of a pane of glass yourself – the formula used by our calculator is intuitive, even for laypeople. To do this, use the following values:

  • Length of the disc (in millimeters)
  • Width of the disc (in millimeters)
  • Thickness of the pane (in millimeters)

Multiplying these measurements together yields the volume of the pane (cm³). To finally calculate the glass/mirror weight, this value is multiplied again by the specific density of glass (2.5g/cm³). The final value of the calculation then corresponds to the weight of the glass pane/mirror.

Calculate mirror weight: Safe installation on any surface

Unlike kitchen backsplashes, glass doors, or even decorative glass shower screens, many mirrors (freestanding or bathroom mirror cabinets) are typically hung directly on walls, without stabilizing frames or fixed anchors to the ceiling or floor. To ensure that the chosen wall and the respective hanging system can support the weight of the mirror, simply calculate the mirror weight using our online calculator.

The mirror weighs approximately 15 kilograms per square meter (15 kg/m²). Enter the size and thickness of the mirror into our calculator: If the mirror is custom-made, you'll need to add +/- 1 kilogram depending on the options selected, the different frames, and their sizes.

Important: Please note that additional options and their weight are not taken into account when calculating the mirror weight. These include, for example, the following variants:

  • Mirror mount (approx. 0.5 kg)
  • Lighting / Electrical (approx. 3 kg)
  • Full/side cladding (approx. 2 kg)
  • TV mirror (depending on the weight of the TV)
  • Folding mirror (side panels must be included in the width)
  • Glass shelves (depending on the weight of the glass shelf)

Calculating the weight of glass – Frequently asked questions

How heavy is glass?

Conventional glass has a net weight of 2.5 kilograms per square meter (m²) and thickness (in mm). For each additional square meter of surface area or millimeter of thickness, the glass weight increases by 2.5 kilograms. This results in a weight of 2,500 kilograms for one cubic meter of glass (m³).

What is the density of glass?

Commercially available glass (usually used glass) has a density of 2.5g/cm³, which corresponds to 2.5kg/m² for a glass thickness of 1 millimeter. This makes glass one of the materials with a tendency toward higher density. When heated accordingly, the volume of the glass changes, while the weight remains unchanged.

What special features apply when calculating the weight of a laminated glass pane?

Laminated safety glass (LSG) is manufactured by bonding and laminated several panes of glass together. To calculate the glass weight, the total thickness of all panes is used as the basis. The weight of the laminate can generally be neglected.
